Rap Group Kneecap Issues Apology to Families of Slain MPs

Rap trio Kneecap has apologised to the families of two murdered MPs.

Controversial Statements at Performances

The apologies to the families of Sir David Amess and Jo Cox came after the band faced condemnation from Downing Street and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch when footage emerged from a gig appearing to show one member urging support for the killing of MPs. Counter-terrorism police in London are examining the footage, along with a video clip from another concert in November 2024. In a statement, Kneecap claimed it had been the subject of a smear campaign.

Rejection of Violence and Contextual Claims

The Belfast group comprising Liam Og O Hannaidh, Naoise O Caireallain, and JJ O Dochartaigh rejected any suggestion of inciting violence against MPs. They insisted footage had been taken out of context and exploited. Kneecap denounced the exploitation and weaponization of the content, maintaining that their message has always been one of love, inclusion, and hope. The band has stressed that they have never supported Hamas or Hezbollah and have condemned all attacks on civilians. They expressed heartfelt apologies to the Amess and Cox families and maintained their commitment to unity and positivity despite recent controversies.
