A woman who was attacked by her XL Bully dog in Co Down has shared her harrowing experience of fearing for her life. Police Response

Police officers and ambulance crews were called to the incident at Rathmullan Drive, Newtownards, shortly after 6 pm following reports that a man and woman had been attacked by a dog. The street was sealed off for a time with a large police presence in the area, resulting in officers discharging shots to destroy the animal.

Owner's Account

Speaking to BBC News, the dog's owner, known only as Ashton, recounted the moment she thought she was going to die after the attack. She described the terrifying moment the dog latched onto her and how her partner's intervention saved her life. Ashton praised the PSNI for their swift response to ensure public safety.

Previous Incidents

Ashton disclosed that theXL Bullyhad been in her care for seven years and emphasized its good health. Despite previous visits from council and animal welfare officers that found no issues, Ashton declined to comment on whether the dog had shown aggression before.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed the incident and subsequent actions taken to protect public safety, including informing the Police Ombudsman. Both victims received first aid at the scene before being taken to the hospital. The dog was destroyed due to the risk it posed.
