Empowering Change: Students Advocate for Gender-Neutral School Attire

Two students from Co Fermanagh have launched a campaign calling for girls to be allowed to wear trousers at school.

Challenging Outdated Policies
Astrid Knox and Rhea Flood from Enniskillen are at the forefront of this movement, advocating for the right of students to choose their clothing as a form of equality. With the backing of Maddison Blair from the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Youth Panel, the duo is challenging schools to reconsider their uniform guidelines.

Advocating for Change
Rhea expressed her desire for more freedom during break time activities, stating, "You can learn the same in trousers as skirts. I just want to do cartwheels at break time." Astrid emphasized the importance of choice, highlighting how clothing options can break traditional gender norms.

Supporting Equality
Parents, educators, and students are urged to support the initiative led by Astrid and Rhea, promoting inclusivity and gender-neutral dress codes in school environments. The campaign aligns with fundamental rights outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and emphasizes the importance of children's voices being heard and respected by adults.

Empowering the Youth
As the campaign gains momentum, Chris Quinn, the NI Children's Commissioner, commended the students for their commitment to fairness and gender equality. He stressed the significance of listening to the concerns raised by young advocates and underlined the need for schools to review their uniform policies accordingly.

Progressive Guidance
While school uniform regulations in Northern Ireland are determined by individual schools, the Department of Education requires that they ensure policies are fair, practical, and financially reasonable. The guidance emphasizes the importance of providing uniforms that are practical, comfortable, and represent good value for families.
