Plumber's Guilty Plea: £11k Payment Fraud Scandal Uncovered

A plumber in Co Antrim has pleaded guilty to fraud after failing to install a heat pump despite receiving an £11k payment. Details
Derek Dawson (53) of Ashcroft Way in Lower Ballinderry was handed a two-year conditional discharge at Newry Crown Court on March 25. In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service (TSS), Mr Dawson admitted to one charge under the Fraud Act 2006. He was paid £11,780 by a consumer to supply and install a heat pump, but failed to carry out the work. The Scheme
During a discussion about the heating system, it was agreed that Mr Dawson would fit an air source heat pump to cut heating costs. He requested full payment of £11,780, which the consumer made by bank transfer. However, Mr Dawson kept delaying the job for months before effectively cancelling it. He promised a refund that never materialized, ultimately leading the consumer to contact Trading Standards. Investigation Report
Kevin McNamara of Trading Standards Service condemned this fraudulent act, emphasizing that the trader took a substantial sum upfront but did no work. Consumers affected by similar issues are advised to contact Consumerline. Looking Ahead
TSS aims to safeguard consumers by spreading awareness about fraudulent traders and taking appropriate action against them. For the latest news and updates, visit the Belfast Live homepage and subscribe to the daily newsletter.
