Man Avoids Jail Time for Harassing Government Official and School Head

A man in Belfast has avoided jail time after being sentenced to a suspended term for sending more than 100 abusive emails to Stormont Education Minister Paul Givan and the former principal of Lisneal College in Derry. Harassment Conviction
John Hendron, 62, of Cullingtree Fold on the Falls Road in west Belfast, was found guilty of subjecting the victims to a series of unfounded allegations and calls for resignation. The offences were committed over a period of time earlier this year. The court heard that the emails primarily criticized the victims' handling of education matters and described Mr. Givan in derogatory terms. Apology and Admissions
Upon arrest, Hendron admitted to the campaign of harassment but maintained that he had no personal vendetta against Mr. Givan. He acknowledged his actions were fueled by alcohol and expressed remorse for the situation. Sentencing and Restraining Order
Due to his previous good record, District Judge Alan White imposed a suspended sentence and a two-year restraining order against any further contact with one of the victims. Hendron's defense solicitor expressed his client's willingness to publicly apologize and seek reconciliation with the victims.
